Mainframe Programmer

Responsible for converting project specifications, statements of problems, and procedures to detailed logical flow charts for coding into mainframe applications using programming languages such as COBOL, CICS, various 4GLs, and so forth. A Mainframe Programmer analyzes workflow charts or diagrams and considers requirements, computer storage capacity, speed, intended use of output data, and any other relevant factors before developing and writing mainframe programs to store, locate, and retrieve specific documents, data, and information. A person in this position often has to analyze, revise, or direct revision of existing programs to increase/optimize operating efficiency or adapt to new requirements. A Mainframe Programmer may also have to compile and write documentation of mainframe program development and subsequent revisions as well as instructions to guide operating personnel during production runs.
